Fascinated by the big question of how we share the public space in contemporary big cities I am observing since 2005, how citizens take care of plants on public sidewalks, through which they ‘donate’ greenery to the city on the one hand, while claiming public space on the other.
After 20 years of working on the project Growing Care I now believe I can recognize the country of origin by the plants someone chooses to place in front of his door.
Is the choice determined by homesickness? Do you start planting once you feel at home, or does caring for plants help you settle into your new location?
Are gardens perhaps our ultimate homes?
Growing Topos is the title of my project during the three months working residency in the Feyenoord district in Rotterdam, one of the most multicultural areas of the city.
